ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Principal takes a daily leadership role in the school by:
• demonstrating care and commitment to academic excellence
in a safe teaching and learning environment
• holding everyone, under their authority, accountable for their behaviour and actions
• demonstrate respect for all members of the school community
(parents, staff and students)
• empowering students to be positive leaders in their school and community
• communicating regularly and meaningfully with all members of their school community
Teachers and school staff hold everyone to the highest standard of respectful/responsible behaviour when they:
• help students work to their full potential and self worth
• empower students to be leaders in class, school and community
• communicate regularly and meaningfully with parents
• maintain consistent standards of behaviour for all students
• demonstrate respect for all members of the school community
(parents, staff and students)
• prepare students for the full responsibilities of citizenship
• plan and conduct an effective program
• evaluate students and report student progress
• know and follow the rules of the school
Respect and responsibility are demonstrated by students when they:
• come to school prepared, on time and ready to learn
• show respect for themselves, others (including property of
others), those in authority and members of the school community
• refrain from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others
• follow the established rules and takes responsibility for his or her own actions
• work to the best of his or her ability in all areas of school life • use a daily agenda
report to any school staff or parent if he/she is being bullied or if he/she sees someone else being bullied
Parents support a safe and respectful learning environment when they:
• show an active interest in their child’s school work and progress
• communicate regularly and effectively with the school
• help their child be neat, appropriately dressed and prepared for school
• ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time
• promptly report to the school their child’s absence or late arrival
• become familiar with and follow the Code of Conduct and school rules
• encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behaviour
• assist school staff in dealing with disciplinary issues involving their child • demonstrate respect for all members of the school community (parents, staff and students)• review student’s agenda daily report to any school staff if their child or any child is being bullied.
EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOUR
In the School:
• be polite and courteous
• use safe behaviour free from bullying (physical aggression, verbal aggression, social alienation and intimidation)
• follow the school dress code
• demonstrate behaviours promoting a healthy lifestyle
• use individual, class and school property and facilities with care
• leave potentially dangerous and/or valuable items at
home
• use appropriate language
• comply with the rules for use of computer and internet
• use washrooms properly with staff permission
• remove hats when entering the classroom
• walk safely and considerately
• do not chew gum
On the School Property:
• use safe behaviour free from bullying (physical aggression, verbal aggression, social alienation and intimidation)
• walk on the sidewalks when entering and exiting the schoolyard
• remain on the schoolyard during school hours
• only be in the parking lot under the direct supervision of an adult
• walk bicycles, skateboards roller skates, etc. while on school property (must wear a helmet)
• place all garbage and recyclables in the appropriate containers
• use the playground and sports equipment in a responsible and safe manner
During the Lunch Hour:
• wash hands before eating
• remain seated
• refrain from sharing food
• carry on conversation in an appropriate “inside” voice
• behave in a considerate manner
• tidy own eating area
• properly use garbage pails and/or recycling containers
Out of School Activities:
• students are expected to follow these expectations during all school related activities and strive to project a positive image for their school
COURSES OF ACTION
A progressive discipline approach that utilizes a continuum of interventions, supports and consequences that include opportunities for reinforcing positive behaviour while helping students make good choices will be used with each breach of the Code of Conduct by students. The particular student and circumstance, nature and severity of the behaviour and impact on school climate will be considered. Staff will use their professional judgement to determine the consequences. It may be one or more of the following types of consequences:
- a discussion to address the inappropriate behaviour
- logical consequence to match the behaviour
- time out
- parental awareness and involvement
- removal of privileges
- community service (e.g. cleaning desks, yard clean-up)
- in school suspension
- detention

isolation/removal
- a follow-up assignment
-
restitution
- suspension from school
- police involvement
- expulsion/ program
